Campaign Now Ongoing
Under the American Sun (Camp Roxas Film Project) has surged forward in the last seven years with the support of local and federal grants, private donations from the Camp Roxas community and personal funds. The project requires at least $50,000 for post-production costs to expand the film to 60-minute documentary. All funds donated to this film project will be used toward the completion of the film.
Your donation will make you a part of a rare undocumented history of the Filipino labor experience which someday will be heralded as a pioneering historical work in the Asian-Pacific experience. (Campaign ends Dec. 20, 2013)

Yes, this is my Dad! He was proud of being a "houseboy." At one point, while at Camp Roxas, he was sent to work as a houseboy for 2 of the Atkins Kroll executives who lived in Agana Heights, near the friary. Later on, he worked as a houseboy for a Navy chaplain & his wife. Dad learned how to use the stove & oven to cook American-style meals, serve coffee, use washing machines, irons & lawn mowers while assigned with the chaplain.

Again Kudos to the staff of the Camp Roxas Project. Talking to my father, Ben Galarpe, he remembers everything vividly and it brings a smile to his face. After leaving Iloilo by ship and arriving on Guam in 1950, he started life in Camp Roxas. In 1954, after four years in Camp Roxas, he joined the US Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks. In 1955, he became a Naturalized US citizen and served combat duty in the DMZ during the Korean War. In 1956, he returned back to Guam and worked for the US Navy. In 1959, he got married to our mother, Gloria. In 1963, he returned to the Philippines for school and in 1968, he finally returned to Guam and worked for the University of Guam. While working at the university, he started the infamous company, The Visayan Construction Co. and thus started the lives of the Galarpe family of Guam, the 80 families from the Philippines and the 38 Korean families who worked with him and Joe Pegarido. - Bill Galarpe
