DelaCruz Photo Collection - Under the American Sun: Camp Roxas Documentary Film Project
Ramon C. Dela Cruz

There really isn’t much we know about how my father came to work at Camp Roxas or exactly what he did there.  He was always a very quiet and private person who didn’t share very much about his past with us.

We asked him a few questions about his life before he passed away in 2007.  From what we recall of conversations, Daddy has always said he came over and was recruited to work with a group of people from his province, Iloilo City, to help build military facilities on island.  We would only imagine the living conditions were quite simple and the work they did was labor intensive.

There were a few black and white photos we remember looking at as a child that showed him and a few friends or camp mates posing together.  It did not dawn on us the sacrifice those men like our dad had to endure in order to leave the Philippines for a better life in America.

We suppose that could be one of the many reasons dad never talked about what his life was like prior to marrying our mom and having the five of us.  Sadly, there is a lot about our dad’s past life we are unaware of and we will never really know, but what we are certain of is that dad was a good father who loved his children and really encouraged us in a quiet yet firm way to be the best possible people we could be.
