Film Project Team Dedicates First Screening to Ex-Camp Roxas Members
TAMUNING, Guam - Officials with the Camp Roxas Film Project are pleased to invite the public to an afternoon of screenings for the documentary, Under the American Sun. The film is a work in progress. This will be the first time the 20-minute version of the film will be shown on Guam.

The screenings will take place at the Agana Shopping Center on Sunday, June 28, 2009 in the retail space to the left of Gino’s. Showtimes are 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. The first showing of the day, 1:30 p.m., will be dedicated to the ex-members of Camp Roxas.

All ex-members and one guest will be given free entrance. The first screening as well as the two other showings are also open to the public. Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 and under.
Money raised from ticket sales will be used towards additional film expenses including a research trip to the Philippine province of Iloilo. A majority of the members of the camp, referred to as Ilonggos, were recruited from that province. Iloilo International, a nonprofit community service organization composed of Ilonggos, is co-sponsor for the event.

Under the American Sun is a documentary that traces the migration of the initial Filipino laborers to arrive in Guam to rebuild the island soon after WWII. A recruitment effort spanned over two decades (1946-1972), with more than an estimated 15,000 Filipino men and women migrating to Guam. Their settlement at Camp Roxas laid the foundation for four generations of Ilonggos to become Americans.

Under the American Sun exemplifies the richness and diversity of Guam’s people and reveals the Ilonggos’ impact on the economic, political, social and cultural fabric of Guam
